The fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and electric power consumption figures were determined according to the European Regulation (EC)
715/2007 in the version applicable. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany. The range shown considers the different
sizes of the selected wheels/tyres and the selected items of optional equipment, and may vary during configuration.

The values for the vehicles marked * are already based on the new WLTP test cycle and have been translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure comparability between the vehicles. With respect to these vehicles, for vehicle-related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO2 emissions, the CO2 values may differ from the values stated here (depending on national legislation).

The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the latest version of the Pkw-EnVKV, and based (for classification) on the fuel consumption and CO2 values as per the NEDC cycle.

A sports car with passion and character. 



The presentation of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe adds a brand new chapter to the Bavarian premium carmaker’s long history of sensational sports cars – and gets its current model offensive in the luxury segment off to a particularly dynamic start. The BMW 8 Series Coupe is a dream car boasting outstanding performance, emotion-stirring design, state-of-the-art luxury and exceptionally advanced equipment features when it comes to display and control technology, driver assistance and connectivity.


The worldwide market launch of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe will commence in November 2018. The sports car will be built at the BMW Dingolfing plant, which is also home to the BMW 7 Series sedans meaning that it has acquired tremendous expertise in the manufacture of luxury vehicles. The digit 8 in the model name is indicative of the newcomer’s high- ranking status within BMW’s product range. As in the past with the BMW Z8 and also with the current BMW i8, it is reserved for exceptionally sporty cars that fire the emotions. The BMW 8 Series Coupe will therefore be a key component of the luxury segment model offensive set out by the BMW Group as part of its NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy.


The primary development objective for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe was thrilling driving dynamics. Body, powertrain and suspension were consistently honed to achieve the supreme agility, precision and poise expected of a top- class sports car. In the process, remarkably powerful engines were combined with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and
BMW EfficientLightweight design measures. The new BMW 8 Series Coupe
was developed in parallel to the BMW M8 GTE, which had already proven its potential in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) long-distance races and in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IWSC) held in North America. The production car now makes it possible to experience outstandingly dynamic performance in an exceedingly luxurious setting.


Exterior design: new design language gives sporting appeal a new face.
The exterior design of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe exudes a very modern form of sporting appeal beautifully blended with an air of exclusiveness and sensual allure. The production model therefore lives up to all the expectations engendered by the BMW Concept 8 Series first unveiled at the Concorso 

d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in 2017. Its unique aura is the result of a new styling language focusing on clarity, modernity and emotional engagement. The expressive surface design of the exterior bodyshell emphasises the dynamic character of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe with greater intensity than on any of the brand’s previous models. The expansive surfaces are structured using very crisp, pared-down character lines.


The car’s low-slung design, an elongated silhouette with a slim window graphic and a roofline flowing elegantly into the powerfully shaped rear with distinctive “double-bubble” contouring, a long wheelbase and wide track widths are the defining elements of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe’s proportions that make no secret of the dynamic driving experience in store. With exterior dimensions of 4,843 mm in length, 1,902 mm in width,
1,341 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2,822 mm, the two-door car adopts an extremely powerful stance on the road. Everything about its appearance conveys pure dynamism and turns the BMW 8 Series Coupe into a luxury sports car brimming with passion and character.


Extremely slim headlights, optional BMW Laserlight.
The sports car’s immense drive power is visualised to stunning effect by the elaborate, jutting design of the front apron, the large air intakes – which assume an even more imposing appearance on the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe and in conjunction with the M Sport package – and the precise contours of the bonnet. The low-down BMW kidney grille is likewise amply proportioned and features a hexagonal outline that widens towards the bottom and a single-piece surround that encompasses its various elements. The new BMW 8 Series Coupe comes as standard with LED headlights that are the slimmest headlights of any BMW model to date. Both light tubes are used to generate the daytime driving lights as well as the low and high beam, thereby creating the signature brand look at all times.


BMW Laserlight with variable road illumination and Selective Beam is optionally available. BMW Laserlight has a high beam range of around 600 metres. Blue accents inside the trademark twin headlights give away the presence of the highly advanced lighting technology.


The side view is dominated by a dramatic interplay of surfaces. Whilst the surfaces curve inwards on the far side of the front wheels, they bulge outwards again in a real display of power above the rear wheels. This interplay of surfaces has been created using just a few, crisp character lines that seem to trace the flow of the air exiting the Air Breathers. 

The glasshouse is sharply tapered at the rear, accentuating the muscular shoulderline in the process and providing a clear promise of an exhilarating driving experience. The elongated side window graphic terminates in a very tightly-angled version of the Hofmeister kink “counter-swing”. The long, heavily raked rear window is another classic design feature of high-calibre sports cars.


The rear end is also composed of sculptural, emotive surfaces that emphasise
the car’s width and low centre of gravity. The slender all-LED rear light clusters that extend deep into the flanks add to this effect while also emphasising the wide shoulders. The taillight bar lights up uniformly in the distinctive ‘L’ shape so typical of the brand. Twin exhaust tailpipes with a trapezoidal contour are positioned either side of the rear apron’s lower section.


Precise details optimise aerodynamics and weight.
An almost fully sealed underbody, active air flap control with adjustable kidney grille slats and Air Curtains including Air Breathers help to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe’s streamlined body. Narrow exterior mirror bases that are mounted directly on the side window weather strips also help smooth the airflow. This is the first time they have featured in this modern and elegant form on a model with frameless side windows. On the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe, an additional front spoiler further minimises the lift that occurs at the front axle at high speeds. The BMW
M Performance model is fitted with an M rear spoiler as standard too.


The roof of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe takes a leaf from the book of traditional sports car design by featuring a central cutout that recalls the “double-bubble” styling of classic racing cars. This design feature furthermore mimics the rush of air rearwards along the roof at high speeds.


This distinctive contouring also graces the optional carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof, which is featuring for the first time on a BMW production model and lowers the centre of gravity even further, thus enhancing the sports car’s agility. Further weight savings can be achieved with the optional Carbon package comprising air intake bars, exterior mirror caps, a rear spoiler and a rear diffuser insert all made from CFRP.


M Sport package and Chrome Line exterior with high-impact design features.
Besides extra-large air intakes in the front apron, a prominently contoured rear apron and specially designed side skirts, the M Sport package for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe adds a host of other design features that bring this 

model’s dynamic character to the fore. These include Air Breathers finished in Pearl-effect Chrome on the inside and a rear diffuser in a grey colour scheme, which coordinate beautifully with the Aluminium matt faces of the kidney grille slats.


Apart from the M rear spoiler, the additional visual highlights forming part of the M Technic Sport Package include extended BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim that also adorns the BMW kidney grille surround and slats, the Air Breathers and the exhaust tailpipes.


The BMW M850i xDrive Coupe also underlines its individuality with numerous model-specific exterior appointments. The aerodynamically optimised bodywork elements included in the M Sport package are complemented by
an additional front spoiler and a body-coloured M rear spoiler along with exclusive design accents in Cerium Grey. The features finished in this striking colour include the BMW kidney grille surround and slats, exterior mirror caps, Air Breather inlays, tailpipe trims, as well as the M logo on the front flanks and the model badge on the rear.


The Chrome Line exterior option provides another way of customising the exterior and features a chrome finish for the side window graphic and exterior mirror bases as well as the BMW kidney grille surround and slats in high-gloss chrome.


Exclusive paint finishes from BMW Individual.
The new BMW 8 Series Coupe will be launched with a choice of one non- metallic and six metallic exterior paint finishes that underscore either the defiantly sporty or elegantly luxurious character of the two-door model.
Carbon Black metallic and Barcelona Blue metallic will be offered as additional
exterior colours for the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe and in conjunction with the M Sport package. The wide choice of BMW Individual paint finishes and BMW Individual special paint finishes that will be available for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe at launch or shortly afterwards all create a particularly exclusive look. 

Luxurious ambience with exceptionally sporty attributes. 

The modern and minimalistic exterior design language is continued inside the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. The elaborate design of the interior is awash with high-precision details and creates a harmonious balance between driver- focused dynamics and luxurious elegance. Both driver and passengers experience the cocooning spatial feel that is typical for a sports car together with the exclusive ambience of a vehicle from the luxury segment.


The seamless transition between the instrument panel and door trim is made even smoother by the coordinated surface textures and a careful choice of materials. The fulled leather trim for the instrument panel and door shoulders is standard on the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. The electroplated surfaces of the side air vent surrounds and the accent strips in the vicinity of the door openers likewise provide visual unity. The door openers sport a “closed clasp” design that allows them to be integrated in a particularly stylish manner.


Longitudinally oriented lines direct the gaze to the front.
At the same time, all lines point lengthways, automatically directing the gaze forward towards the road and emphasising the focus on sporty driving. This is particularly true of the car’s wide centre console, which rises up towards the instrument panel at the front, clearly separating the driver and front passenger areas. This is where the audio control unit and its function buttons, the air conditioning control panel with its block of buttons, the displays and central air vents for the air conditioning, as well as the freestanding and frameless
Control Display are arranged above each other in a clear, horizontally partitioned structure.


The clear arrangement of the controls also helps the driver to focus on what’s happening ahead. Apart from the gear selector and the iDrive Controller, the centre console also accommodates the Driving Experience Control switch and the engine start/stop button, all arranged within a newly designed function cluster with active haptic feedback. The control unit for the light functions is also new and now consists of a block of buttons positioned at the bottom of the instrument panel between the steering wheel and the driver’s door. A leather sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and shift paddles for manual gear selection is standard on the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. In the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe, the driver pilots the car using an M leather
steering wheel as standard. 

The clear structure of the interior also lets the high-quality materials really stand out. The use of trim finishers, for instance, is restricted to the sports car- style transition between the centre console and the instrument panel. The stainless steel mesh design featured as standard in the new
BMW M850i xDrive Coupe gives the trim finisher a technically sophisticated
appearance. The BMW 840d xDrive, meanwhile, comes with Aluminium Mesh Effect Dark trim as standard. The Fineline Copper Effect high-gloss and Ash Grain Metallic Grey high-gloss fine wood trims are also optionally available. Moreover, the range of highly exclusive options from BMW Individual includes the trim variant Piano Finish Black and the fine wood variant Black Ash Silver Effect high-gloss.


Leather upholstery and folding rear backrests as standard.
The newly developed sports seats offer high levels of long-distance comfort and excellent lateral support during fast cornering. The headrests are visually integrated into the backrests and can be adjusted as required both for height and fore/aft positioning. The seat position is adjusted electrically, while the memory function for both driver and front passenger seat also comes as standard. A semi-electric folding function has been included for the front seat backrests, which is activated using a high-quality leather strap located on each seatback and facilitates convenient entry and exit for the rear passengers.


The sports seats are upholstered as standard in Vernasca leather. Decorative stitching in a contrasting colour accentuates both the sporting contours and the rear seats’ styling as individual seats. The list of optional extras includes Merino leather trim, BMW Individual Merino leather trim with extended appointments as well as BMW Individual Merino full leather trim. Each of these comes in a choice of Black, Cognac and Ivory White as well as a variety of particularly striking two-tone colour schemes.


The multifunction seats fitted as standard in the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe distinguish themselves with extra adjustment options, increased lateral support and even better comfort characteristics. They offer both driver and front passenger the possibility of also adjusting the backrest width and thigh support as desired. The multifunction seats are fitted with a lumbar support too.


There are large door pockets, a roomy glove compartment, two cupholders under the centre console’s trim finisher and a large storage compartment under the armrest’s longitudinally divided cover flaps for stowing travel accessories, beverages and other items. Thanks to the low seating position of both rear seats, it has been possible to design the head restraints as an integral part of the backrests. The rear backrest in the new BMW 8 Series 

Coupe has a 50:50 split as standard. The backrest sections can be folded down either individually or together depending on requirements in order to further increase the load capacity of the 420-litre luggage compartment. The folding mechanism is released by means of levers inside the luggage compartment. Automatic boot lid operation is also a standard feature on the new BMW 8 Series Coupe, while the Comfort Access option furthermore permits hands-free opening and closing of the boot lid.


BMW M Performance model and M Sport package with exclusive interior features.
Both the standard specification for the new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe and the M Sport package for the new BMW 840d xDrive Coupe contain exclusive design features and options for additional enhancement of the dynamic driving experience. In addition to multifunction seats and the M leather
steering wheel, these also include the BMW Individual Merino leather trim with
extended appointments in an exclusive Black colour with piping in BMW M GmbH colours. There is furthermore an anthracite BMW Individual headliner, M pedals, M driver’s footrest and special floor mats to inject the cabin with distinctly sporty flair. The illuminated door sills and the display in the
instrument cluster bear the BMW M Performance Automobile model badge or the M logo respectively. In conjunction with the M Technic Sport Package, the exclusive interior design is supplemented by black seat belts with accent stripes in M GmbH colours.


High-class options for sheer luxury.
The luxurious side of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe’s character can also be brought more to the fore with the help of a wide array of top-quality optional extras. Newly designed climate seats for driver and front passenger are available as an upgrade to the optional heated seats. For the first time, the cooled air is sucked in from the interior then guided along the body to the seats’ built-in fans for particularly effective temperature control of the seat cushions and backrests.


Thanks to the option of telephony with wireless charging, it is possible to charge compatible mobile telephones without the need for a cable. The BMW Display Key lets drivers stay in touch with their BMW 8 Series Coupe at all times. Besides indicating the fuel level and service-related information, the colour display is also able to show whether the doors and windows of the car are closed or locked.


The standard Ambient light feature emphasises the forward-pointing lines inside the car to striking effect. Indirect illumination of the contour lines running along the centre console and the door shoulders using precisely 

positioned LED optical fibres creates a both dynamic and exclusive mood. The colour of the light can be changed via the iDrive menu. In addition to this, the Dynamic interior light function emits pulsating light signals in specific situations. These signals appear on the inner panelling of an open door when the engine is running and on the instrument panel in response to an incoming phone call.


The standard audio system comprises eleven speakers and a digital amplifier, while there is also the option of the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System featuring 16 speakers. The highlight in the line-up of optional entertainment systems is without doubt the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System. The unrivalled Diamond loudspeaker technology, fully active 16- channel amplifier with an output of 1,375 watts, dynamic equalizing and 16 partly illuminated speakers combine together to deliver a beautifully precise and multifaceted acoustic experience whose pristine quality can be enjoyed in equal measure from all seats in the new BMW 8 Series Coupe.


The optional glass applications for selected controls add both visual and tactile highlights to the interior design. This exclusive design feature adorns the gear selector, the iDrive Controller, the start/stop button and the volume control for the audio system. An illuminated ‘8’ can be seen through the glass surface of the gear selector.

The BMW M Performance model that will be available from launch provides a particularly impressive demonstration of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe’s sporting essence. Under the bonnet of the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe lies a
390 kW/530 hp V8 engine that has undergone extensive refinement and produces formidable power. It serves up a particularly intense form of the unmistakable power delivery and acoustics of eight-cylinder units and is every bit as captivating and emotionally thrilling as the car it powers. The second engine available at market launch clearly demonstrates the long-distance prowess of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. The 235 kW/320 hp six-cylinder
in-line diesel engine in the BMW 840d xDrive Coupe combines instantaneous pulling power with exemplary efficiency that greatly reduces the number of refuelling stops necessary when touring.


Both engines transfer their power to a latest-generation eight-speed Steptronic transmission that boasts a wider gear ratio spread and even sportier gear shifts and can be operated by means of shift paddles on the steering wheel. Completing the all-round package for supreme driving dynamics is the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which is also fitted in a newly improved version that has been tuned for this specific model.
The rear-wheel bias of the xDrive system and the rear differential lock fitted as standard on the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe ensure maximum agility and precision when the car’s sporting capabilities are being put to the test.


New V8 engine with incredible power and acoustics.
The launch of the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe also marks the premiere of a new V8 engine. The latest generation of the 4.4-litre eight-cylinder unit has been radically revised and numerous details optimised. Two twin-scroll turbochargers with charge air cooling located within the V-shaped space between the cylinder banks, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing all form part of the M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology, whose extensive overhaul has given a substantial boost to maximum output, torque and efficiency. The new V8 power unit serves up an enthralling blend of prodigious power delivery and an equally impressive soundtrack, which is further enhanced by the standard flap-controlled sports exhaust system. It
also boasts a wonderfully versatile character that makes it ideal for effortlessly relaxed cruising too. The Driving Experience Control switch can be used to 

activate both an extremely sporty and a distinctly comfort-oriented powertrain set-up, thereby making the engine’s wide-ranging characteristics clearly perceptible. In the SPORT and SPORT+ modes, accelerator response as well as the V8 engine’s power delivery and acoustics – which take on a particularly distinctive note in the SPORT+ setting – are all configured for an extremely dynamic driving experience.


The crankcase is another of the brand new components on the V8 engine. A new aluminium alloy has been used to increase the robustness of the basic engine. The wire-arc sprayed iron coating for the cylinder walls serves to reduce frictional losses. Reinforced, Grafal-coated pistons and optimised piston rings are designed to endure the strain on the crank drive that comes with the extra output and torque. The con rods, the main bearing shells, the cylinder head gaskets and the chain drive can all be noted for their optimised material characteristics. To enhance engine smoothness, torsional vibration is now minimised with the help of a viscous damper on the crankshaft.


Optimised power delivery, efficiency and emissions performance. In order to achieve rapid and stable combustion, the intake ports have been optimised for high levels of gas exchange. The enlarged twin-scroll turbochargers and the variability of the valve and camshaft timing enable throttling losses during the gas-exchange cycle to be eliminated as far as possible and allow particularly effective use to be made of exhaust gas recirculation for lowering fuel consumption. Electrically controlled wastegate actuators are used to ensure an extremely dynamic build-up of boost pressure, while electric blow-off valves have been integrated into the compressor housing to guarantee a superb turbocharger sound even during load dumps at the same time as keeping emissions as low as possible in all operating states. The intake air ducting has also been redesigned and its throttling losses minimised. A connection between the air ducts for both cylinder banks ensures remarkably even pulsation during gas exchange, resulting in noticeably higher torque at low engine speeds.


The multi-hole injectors of the direct petrol injection system are positioned centrally between the valves and operate at a maximum pressure that has been upped from 200 to 350 bar. This has the effect of optimising both the metering of the fuel and the engine’s emissions performance. The V8 unit furthermore features a new ignition system and particularly efficient engine management.


In addition to this, the thermal shielding and the cooling circulation system have also undergone extensive modification. An upstream coolant radiator helps meet the high demands on the engine’s temperature management 

during extremely sporty driving. To ensure both supreme performance characteristics and robustness, the new V8 engine was subject to an exhaustive programme of testing encompassing all potential load situations – from fatigue tests at idle speed to highly dynamic calibration drives on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit.


Thanks to a 50 kW/68 hp increase in output with no impact on weight compared to the engine it replaces, the new V8 unit is now able to generate
390 kW/530 hp, which is on tap between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. At the same
time, maximum torque has been raised by 100 Nm (74 lb-ft) to 750 Nm (553 lb-ft), which is available over a wide rev range from 1,800 to 4,600 rpm for prolonged forward thrust.


The new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph)
in just 3.7 seconds. The combined fuel consumption of 10.5 – 10.0 litres per
100 kilometres (26.9 – 28.3 mpg imp)* and the combined CO2 emissions of
240 – 228 grams per kilometre* clearly demonstrate that the increase in the eight-cylinder engine’s power has gone hand in hand with improvements to its efficiency too. The emissions performance of the new V8 engine has been further optimised by the inclusion of larger, close-coupled catalytic converters and a gasoline particulate filter, thereby enabling it to fulfil all relevant emission regulations worldwide, including the stringent EU6d-TEMP standard that will come into force from September 2019.


Powerful and efficient straight-six diesel engine.
The new BMW 840d xDrive Coupe provides another highly distinctive take on the sports car genre. The unprecedented use of a diesel engine in this segment produces a delightful mix of supreme pulling power and excellent
fuel economy. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel unit with BMW
TwinPower Turbo technology delivers a maximum output of 235 kW/320 hp and peak torque of 680 Nm (501 lb-ft), which is available as low down as
1,750 rpm.


The engine employs multi-stage turbocharging technology and its performance characteristics permit relaxed cruising at low engine speeds, while also enabling the car to sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in only
4.9 seconds. Pressing the accelerator hard prompts a distinctive acoustic
accompaniment from the sports exhaust system that has been specially configured for this model.


The common-rail direct injection system employs piezo injectors that operate with a maximum pressure of 2,500 bar, ensuring precise metering of the

amount of fuel injected and clean combustion. Besides this, the diesel engine also features a weight-optimised aluminium crankcase with cylinder walls coated using the wire-arc spraying method, thus increasing both the engine’s internal efficiency and its robustness. Exhaust gas recirculation for the low- pressure and high-pressure stages further optimises the power unit’s fuel consumption and emissions.


The engine’s exemplary efficiency reinforces the character of the new BMW 8
Series Coupe as a sports car eminently suitable for long-distance travel that guarantees non-stop driving pleasure even after hundreds of miles out on the road. Average fuel consumption of the new BMW 840d xDrive Coupe comes in at a frugal 6.2 – 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres (45.6 – 47.9 mpg imp)*, equating to CO2 emissions of 164 – 154 grams per kilometre*. The system of emission control incorporating BMW BluePerformance technology comprises a particulate filter, an oxidation catalyst, a NOX adsorption catalyst, as well as
an SCR catalyst with AdBlue injection for further reduction of nitrogen oxide
emissions. As a result, the new BMW 840d xDrive Coupe complies with the limits of the EU6d-TEMP emission standard.


Eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with wider ratio spread and sportier gear shifts.
The engines transfer their power to a new, improved version of the eight- speed Steptronic Sport transmission. The latest version of the automatic transmission features a weight-reduced design, a newly developed controller and a gear ratio spread that has been increased from 7.07 to 8.59. As a result, it is possible to achieve significant efficiency gains with reduced engine speeds, particularly when driving in higher gears. At the same time, the eight- speed Steptronic Sport transmission now shifts gear even more sharply courtesy of the optimised hydraulics control. A new generation of torsion dampers that reduce rotational irregularities within the powertrain help to optimise both driving comfort and shift smoothness. Integral twin-damper systems for isolating vibrations reduce the degree of slip at the torque converter lock-up clutch.


Shift paddles on the steering wheel are included as standard for manual gear selection, while the transmission furthermore features a Launch Control function for accelerating from a standing start with maximum power and optimised traction.


Intelligent networking increases dynamism and efficiency.

networking with the standard Navigation system Professional, enabling it to take the planned route into account. Navigation data is used, for example, to shift down early when approaching a junction in order to use the engine braking effect to slow the car down. Likewise, the intelligent controller is able to avoid unnecessary gear shifts between two bends that follow in quick succession, making it possible to drive through them even faster.


Intelligent networking also increases the efficiency of the drive system in the new BMW 8 Series Coupe by allowing operation of the Auto Start Stop function to be adapted to suit the specific situation based on data supplied by the navigation system as well as by the cameras and radar sensors of the optional driver assistance systems. In this way, inefficient engine shutdown – for example when stopping briefly at junctions or roundabouts – can be prevented. The movement of vehicles ahead is furthermore registered in
order to determine the ideal moment for stopping and starting the engine.


Besides this, intelligent networking also boosts the efficiency-enhancing effect of the coasting function. When travelling at speeds between 15 and
160 km/h (9 – 99 mph), it ensures that the powertrain is decoupled as soon as
the driver lifts off the accelerator. The vehicle can then simply coast along at idling speed and with minimised fuel consumption. This function is available with the Driving Experience Control switch set to ECO Pro mode and – on the BMW 840d xDrive Coupe – COMFORT mode too. The switch to the sailing mode only takes place in driving situations in which it appears worthwhile and doesn’t compromise comfort or performance. If the accelerator is released very suddenly for instance, the powertrain stays connected in order to use the engine’s drag torque to decelerate. Furthermore, the optional Proactive
Driving Assistant uses both navigation data to gauge the route topography and radar data to calculate the distance to a vehicle ahead and the difference
in speed. What’s more, the levels of smoothness and dynamic response when exiting the coasting mode by depressing the accelerator again have been further improved, meaning that drivers can now enjoy instant recoupling of the powertrain with a simultaneous downshift by the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.


Swift and precise power transfer: BMW xDrive, electronically controlled differential lock.
The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system likewise operates more efficiently than ever before. With its rapid, precise and fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels, it maximises traction and handling stability not just when driving in adverse road conditions, but in highly dynamic driving situations too. Power is split in accordance with demands at
all times using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch that is networked 

with the powertrain and chassis systems on the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. This results in extremely quick and exact response to any changes in the driving situation.


To increase the system’s efficiency, all of the drive torque is directed to the rear wheels in situations in which all-wheel drive is not needed, while an optimised oil supply also serves to increase the system’s internal efficiency levels. The xDrive system’s rear-biased set-up, which is even notable in challenging driving situations, guarantees the sort of driving experience for which BMW sports cars are renowned. When taking corners at speed, for example, just the right amount of extra drive force is transferred to the rear wheels to help the car turn in to the bend with supreme accuracy. The fact that the all-wheel-drive system has been specifically designed for dynamic handling is particularly noticeable in the SPORT and SPORT+ modes of the Driving Experience Control switch.


The electronically controlled rear differential lock also fitted as standard on the new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe gives the car an even sportier edge. The locking effect generated by an electric motor limits speed compensation between the inside and outside rear wheel when cornering, making it possible to power out of bends with eye-catching dynamic verve. Governed by the Driving Stability Control (DSC) system, the locking function for the rear differential also improves traction and power transmission when driving on road surfaces offering differing levels of grip for the left and right rear wheels by preventing a wheel from spinning when it is struggling for purchase. The locking effect produced by the electric motor allows as much as 1,500 Nm (1,106 lb-ft) of drive torque to be redirected from the faster turning to the slower turning wheel. This combines with the intelligent all-wheel drive and
the Integral Active Steering also included as standard on the
BMW 840d xDrive Coupe to give the car all the right tools for supremely agile handling and remarkably dynamic performance in any driving situation. 

Honed on the race track. 


The design principle and tuning of the BMW 8 Series Coupe’s suspension are focused on exploiting the dynamic potential of the car’s powertrain technology and making best use of its inherent gifts to maximise sports performance. Minimised weight, a low centre of gravity and well-balanced weight
distribution, plus an optimal wheelbase, wide tracks, a stiff body structure and
excellent aerodynamics form the ideal basis for a vehicle set-up that is geared squarely to refining agility and dynamics, while also offering a high level of comfort. There is a richness to the new BMW 8 Series Coupe’s handling repertoire – it both inspires the driver with its sporting prowess and cossets them in supreme comfort – that no rival can match.


Suspension technology sharpened with racing know-how.
The suspension technology developed for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe consists of a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle as well as electromechanical steering and an exceptionally powerful braking system developed exclusively for this model. Kinematics and elastokinematics were specifically adapted to the demands of a highly dynamic driving style, delivering maximum agility, precision and performance. Moreover, the racing know-how of BMW M GmbH was used for detailed modifications and enhancements to the overall set-up. Torsion struts on the front axle and a load-bearing strut incorporated on the rear axle optimise stiffness and the connection of suspension components to the bodywork. Independent rubber
bearings – which increase camber stiffness – and additional damping plates at
the rear axle further enhance the suspension’s dynamic baseline set-up. Special wheel carriers and wishbones allow camber values on both axles to be raised as far as possible. This significantly increases the car’s ability to put down power through high-speed corners.


The design principle of the double-wishbone front suspension makes it possible to separate wheel guidance and damper functions. As a result, high lateral acceleration forces are realised without compromising ride comfort. Likewise, the car’s steering remains largely unaffected by disruptive forces caused by irregularities in the road surface. Thanks to bi-elastic mounting, the five-link rear axle guarantees precise wheel guidance and the highest degree of directional stability. In addition, effective decoupling of the powertrain and suspension improves acoustic comfort. 

Adaptive M suspension and Integral Active Steering come as standard.
Standard equipment for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe includes Adaptive
M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. The compression and rebound stages are adjusted continuously and independently. This facilitates finely metered spring and damping responses, providing the driver with only relevant information about the road surface. The extremely stiff suspension springs reduce roll tendency and allow the dampers to stabilise the wheels as much as possible, avoiding traction losses caused by lumps and ruts in the road surface. The electronically controlled dampers respond adaptively to road surface conditions and driving style in order to eliminate undesired vehicle movement. Minor road damage is comfortably filtered out and narrow bumps do not induce unwanted pitching movements.


Damping characteristics can be adjusted via the Driving Experience Control switch. SPORT and SPORT+ modes activate optimal responses for dynamic handling. This is noticeably different from the comfort-oriented damper setting in ECO Pro and COMFORT modes.


The likewise standard Integral Active Steering reduces the car’s turning circle when manoeuvring, increases agility at moderate speeds and optimises poise and assurance when changing lanes and cornering at high speeds. The system combines the electromechanical steering of the front wheels (including Servotronic function for speed-sensitive power assistance) and the variable steering ratio with a steering rear axle. The range of standard features also includes an electrically adjustable steering column that permits infinite steering wheel adjustment for both height and reach.


In order to achieve maximum precision during dynamic cornering, the steering of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe becomes more direct with speed. As a result, on winding roads the car feels particularly biddable and easy to control. The variable steering ratio provides additional comfort. It allows the driver to manoeuvre at low speeds with minimal steering wheel movement and without having to change their grip on the wheel. By contrast, at high speeds the
same steering wheel movement results in decreased steering response,
optimising precision on turn-in.


Active adjustment of the rear wheels by up to 2.5 degrees – thanks to Integral Active Steering – considerably enhances both the agility and cornering dynamics of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. In addition, the rear wheels are steered in the opposite direction to the front wheels at up to 72 km/h
(45 mph). At higher speeds, the steering angle of the rear wheels matches
that of the front wheels, ensuring the car adopts the course determined by the 

driver even more instantly and accurately. Integral Active Steering therefore enhances a sporty and active driving style to great effect. And at the car’s dynamic limit, it feeds in a stabilising steering input to complement the braking intervention triggered in such a situation.


Activating SPORT or SPORT+ model via the Driving Experience Control switch gives an even more direct steering response. At the same time, the maximum speed at which the rear wheels are steered in the opposite direction to the front wheels (to the benefit of agility) is increased to 88 km/h (55 mph).


Active roll stabilisation enhances agility and dynamics.
Active roll stabilisation is optionally available for the new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe and further enhances the car’s sporty handling characteristics. Electric swivel motors on the front and rear axles ensure particularly fast and precise compensation of lateral forces during dynamic driving manoeuvres. The system is controlled by permanent analysis of vehicle speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering wheel position, wheel and body acceleration and variation in height levels. In BMW M Performance models, active roll stabilisation has an exceptionally sporty set-up and responds adaptively to changing requirements. It optimises agility and directional stability on turn-in and helps line the car up as neatly as possible for dynamic acceleration out of corners. The reduced body movement also means fast evasive manoeuvres can be executed with great assurance.


Furthermore, the system increases comfort when driving straight ahead by decoupling the permanent connection between the wheels of an axle. By stabilising the wheel that requires it, the system is extremely effective in counteracting disruptive forces resulting from road surface imperfections on one side of the car.


Model-specific M Sport braking systems, light-alloy wheels with mixed-size high-performance tyres.
Powerful braking characteristics, high thermal stability, fast response and excellent feel characterise the braking systems developed for the new
BMW 8 Series Coupe. All versions combine four-piston, fixed-calliper brakes
at the front and single-piston, floating-calliper brakes at the rear. The electronic parking brake – operated by means of a button located on the centre console – is integrated into the rear brake callipers. The integration of the braking system and DSC stability control guarantees exceptionally precise braking response, braking control and brake boosting.


Inner-vented brake discs and model-specific brake pads are featured both at the front and rear. Directional cooling air ducts help to optimise temperatures. 

The friction rings of each brake disc are riveted to the aluminium drum. Together with the use of aluminium brake callipers, this BMW-patented construction concept significantly reduces unsprung masses.


A particularly powerful version of the M Sport braking system is included in the standard equipment for the new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe. Brake discs measuring 395 mm in diameter facilitate highly effective braking. The M Sport Package optionally available for the BMW 840d xDrive Coupe includes an M Sport braking system with 374 mm discs. With the optional M Technic Sport Package, the BMW 840d xDrive Coupe is also fitted with 395 mm brake discs. Both versions of the M Sport braking system are recognisable by blue
callipers featuring the M logo.


The suspension technology featured in the new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe is oriented towards maximum performance and rounded off by 20-inch M light- alloy wheels. The cast aluminium wheels are standard and come in the exclusive colour Frozen Cerium Grey metallic with a high-gloss polished finish on the face. They are fitted with 245/35 R20 tyres at the front and
275/30 R20 tyres at the rear. The high-performance tyres were developed by
the manufacturer specifically for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe.


The new BMW 840d xDrive Coupe is also fitted with mixed-size tyres as standard. Consequently, the higher lateral stability potential of the wider rear tyres was taken into account when tuning the suspension of this model variant. Standard equipment includes 18-inch light-alloy wheels fitted with
245/45 R18 tyres at the front and 275/40 R18 tyres at the rear. The optional
M Sport package contains 19-inch M light-alloy wheels with 245/40 R19 tyres at the front and 275/35 R19 tyres at the rear. If the likewise optionally available M Technic Sport Package is specified, the new BMW 840d xDrive Coupe is equipped with 20-inch light-alloys fitted with high-performance tyres.


Ideal overall package for maximum performance.
All standard and optional suspension systems for the BMW 8 Series Coupe have been tuned – down to the finest detail – to the powertrain technology in each individual model. Moreover, all the dynamics-related systems have been linked up with one another via the high-speed data transfer system FlexRay to create an overall package geared towards maximum performance.


Permanent evaluation of driving situation data by sensors forms the basis for coordinated system responses. Within a split second, the control unit integrated into the braking system and DSC is able to adapt the powertrain and suspension functions to changing situations, such as varying road surface conditions, sudden braking, spontaneous steering manoeuvres and extreme 

acceleration. Here, the steering, four-wheel-drive system, electronically controlled differential lock and active roll stabilisation are all employed to assist the stabilising effect of brake intervention on individual wheels and adjustment of drive torque. A hierarchical control structure guarantees optimal control of the relevant actuators.


For example, to optimise directional stability when braking heavily on road surfaces with varying grip levels under the right and left-hand wheels, a steering impulse can be transmitted to inform the driver of the necessity to adjust their line. With carefully judged steering inputs on the rear axle, it is possible to counteract a tendency to oversteer or understeer. Furthermore, adjustment of the active roll stabilisation system also assists stable and/or extremely agile steering. Likewise, precise control of the swivel motors can optimise traction in fast bends. Centrally evaluated data on the driving situation optimises the efficiency of the BMW xDrive system’s responses.


Optimised weight thanks to an intelligent material mix.
BMW EfficientLightweight includes the use of an intelligent material mix to optimise both weight and body/suspension rigidity. In addition to the supporting structures at the front and rear of the car, other components such as the roof, doors, bonnet and the front wall of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe are made of aluminium. The bracing tube for the cockpit is made from magnesium and the centre tunnel of CFRP. The roof and other body components can also be specified in CFRP as an option. The front axle is made almost completely from aluminium. The rear axle features a combination of lightweight steel construction with wheel carriers and forged control arms in aluminium.

A particularly wide variety of standard and optionally available driver assistance systems marks out the new BMW 8 Series Coupe as an extremely advanced model within its segment. The systems really come into their own when
driving longer distances by relieving the strain on the driver in monotonous situations, such as traffic jams or slow-moving traffic. They additionally enhance comfort and safety both in urban traffic and on longer trips by providing targeted assistance in complex traffic situations. The driver assistance systems process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, to warn of potential hazards and to minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs. These integral features of the BMW Personal
Co-Pilot represent the latest advances on the road to automated driving.


The BMW 8 Series Coupe is equipped as standard with Cruise Control with braking function as well as Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, the latest version of which also alerts the driver when a cyclist is detected. Depending on the situation, the system can bring the vehicle to a halt to either avoid a collision or minimise its consequences.


The BMW 8 Series Coupe can also be optionally equipped with Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. It can be used at speeds up to 210 km/h (130 mph) and maintains the desired speed while taking not only the traffic situation into account, but also the selected distance to vehicles in front. If required, the system is able to brake the car to a stop then pull away again automatically after being stationary for up to 30 seconds, meaning greater comfort in stop-start traffic. Camera images and data from a front radar
system are used for distance control. The speed limits detected by the Speed
Limit Info traffic sign recognition system including No Passing Info display can be incorporated into the Active Cruise Control’s automatic regulation of the speed with an adjustment of up to 15 km/h (9 mph). The distance information also appears in the standard Head-Up Display. This function helps the driver to keep at a predetermined distance from the vehicle ahead when cruise and distance control are not activated. A warning signal projected onto the windscreen indicates that the gap has fallen below the set distance. 

Driving Assistant Professional: the complete package for comfortable and safe driving.
The optional Driving Assistant Professional offers particularly comprehensive
assistance for comfortable and safe driving. In addition to Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, this complete package also includes the Steering and lane control assistant. To allow convenient activation of the two systems, the BMW 8 Series Coupe is fitted with a special button on the standard multifunction steering wheel for switching on the Active Cruise Control and Steering and lane control assistant simultaneously. A mode button can be pressed to switch to using Active Cruise Control on its own.


Another component of the Driving Assistant Professional is the Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection. This comprises the Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Warning systems, which are active in a speed range from 70 to 210 km/h (44 – 130 mph) and 20 km/h (12 mph) up
to top speed respectively and help the driver guide the vehicle back onto the correct path with an active turn of the steering. Besides emitting visual warning signals and causing the steering wheel to vibrate, active side collision protection also uses active steering intervention to help avoid a collision. The Driving Assistant Professional furthermore includes the evasion aid, which now also reacts to pedestrians, along with the Rear collision warning, Priority warning and Wrong-way warning systems. The Crossing traffic warning – which reduces the danger of a collision when manoeuvring forwards towards roads that are obstructed from the driver’s view – now also includes brake intervention.


Perfect for concentrating on the road ahead: the latest-generation
Head-Up Display.
The BMW Head-Up Display, which comes as standard in the new BMW 8
Series Coupe and projects relevant driving information onto the windscreen in the form of graphics, is another factor in the intensely focused driving experience. The latest generation of the system features a projection area that has been enlarged by a further 16 per cent, optimised graphics and additional content. The BMW Head-Up Display projects information directly into the driver’s field of vision where it can be assimilated without any need for them to divert their eyes from the road. This includes details of vehicle speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions, Check Control messages, status indicators and warnings from the assistance systems, detailed route guidance and turn instructions, as well as telephone and entertainment lists. When driving with the Driving Experience Control switch in SPORT or SPORT+ mode, the
Head-Up Display also indicates engine speed. Plus, there is a digital Optimum
Shift Indicator as an aid for the sports-minded driver in the new BMW 8 Series
Coupe. 

Another item on the list of optional extras is the BMW Night Vision system comprising pedestrian and animal detection as well as a marker light. It relays a real-time video image to the Control Display showing persons, larger
animals and other heat-emitting objects. Any objects detected are additionally
illuminated using the headlights’ marker light function.


Easier parking and manoeuvring.
Drivers of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe also receive effective assistance when parking and manoeuvring. The active Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at the front and rear is standard and provides visual and acoustic warnings to avoid colliding with obstacles at the sides or rear of the vehicle. The optional Parking Assistant is able to automatically select suitable parallel parking spaces and manoeuvre into them. The spaces are identified by ultrasonic sensors as the vehicle drives past. Once it has been activated by simply pressing a button on the centre console, the system takes care of controlling the accelerator, brakes and steering as well as changing gear. In addition to this, the system can now be used for automatically manoeuvring out of parallel parking spaces too. In order to do this, the driver has to first specify in which direction the parking space is to be exited by switching on the indicators on that side. By reversing and steering, the system then
manoeuvres the vehicle into a position from which the driver can leave the
parking space with the steering turned to the given angle.


The Parking Assistant’s range of functions also includes the Reversing Assistant, which helps the driver when exiting parking spaces and manoeuvring within a confined space. The system assumes the task of steering when backing up by tracing the vehicle’s last forward movements in reverse. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. A distance of up to 80 metres can be covered in this way at speeds of up to 9 km/h (5.5 mph). The system is deactivated if either of these values is exceeded.


The optional rear-view camera is designed to afford drivers a clear all-round view, as are many of the functions included with the optional extra Parking Assistant Plus. With the help of the Top View, Panorama View and 3D View functions, a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings is shown on the Control Display from different perspectives. The Remote 3D View function additionally gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.
